#139 CALIFORNIA AFTERNOON Hanson Puthuff is an American artist born
in 1875 in Missouri and died in California in 1972. He is most noted for his
California landscapes and desert paintings. He established himself as a
commercial artist in 1894, making signs and posters for an advertising firm.
In the early 1900s he was commissioned to create the backgrounds for the
habitat groups at the Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science and
Art. Those backgrounds still exist. In 1926 he was commissioned by the
Santa Fe Railroad to paint a series of views of the Grand Canyon which
were among his most noted paintings. California Afternoon is a beautiful
example of semi-impressionism. Oil on canvas, excellent condition, in the
original frame, signed lower left.
